Light of Creation: The Medicine of Ra

As the world moves through this week’s total solar eclipse, we are invited into the ancient teachings of Ra, the Egyptian Sun God. Honoured as the bringer of life, light and consciousness, Ra shows us that no matter how dense the shadows may feel, we are and always have been the light of creation. To the ancient Egyptians, Ra was more than the Sun. He was the force of creation itself. His light gave life to the world, shaped what had no form and brought creation from chaos into order. The Sun was his power made visible. With each rising, he brought the Earth back to life.

Each day, Ra crossed the skies in his solar barque. Each night, he entered the darkness of the Duat carrying the Sun’s fire within. There, battle after battle, he faced Apophis, the serpent of chaos, who sought to stop the Sun from rising and return creation to darkness. Within the Duat, Ra’s light could not be extinguished, and with every sunrise he emerged in full power, overcoming Apophis and restoring Ma’at, the truth, harmony and divine order of creation. The rising Sun was not simply the beginning of another day, but creation restored through illumination.

This is where Ra’s journey becomes our own, as our path sometimes carries us into darkness. The layers formed by all that we have lived through may conceal our true nature but can never extinguish the light that we are. Through Ra’s medicine, what has been held in shadow can finally be seen, met and healed, allowing the veils to fall away and what was hidden to lose its power. This is how the light of creation overcomes darkness, not because we become something new, but because we remember our divinity, the light we have always been and the power we have always had to create from the truth of who we are.
